What was the Renaissance?
The Renaissance began in the 1300s and ended in the 1500s C.E. This time period was the rebirth of trade and commerce. Also in the Renaissance the economy began to use currency again and there were many Italian city-states. (Venice, Genoa, and Milan.) Most of the Italian city-states were self-ruled or had elected rulers. These city-states collected taxes, traded and made their own currency. Trading centers included Florence, which was the center for banking and cloth making, Milan produced metal goods and armor, and Genoa traded Ivory and gold. As the Renaissance grew, humanism developed. Humanism was areas of study that focused on human life and culture. In education students studied human life, culture, history, and ethics. They prized an individual’s achievements more than class and family .
